FAQ about the RTLIGHTS

Q: How do I get these things to work?

A: Enable real-time mode in the darkplaces engine by going to the GRAPHICS menu and selecting RT WORLD and turning it to ON.

Q: What do I need to experience this enhanced quake?

A: There is a detailed requirements segment in the readme.txt found in the ID1.zip. The Darkplaces engine is recommended although other engines now support .rtlights including FTE.

Q: How long did this whole thing take?

A: I spent 3 years working on and off on the ID1 .rtlights, I accomplished alot of other things during that time, alot more than just Quake related things, but in the .rtlight world I finished .rtlights for several custom maps and the Scourge of Armagon expansion pack.

Q: How hard is it to make .rtlights?

A: Go into the console and type in r_editlights 1 and play around. It's not that hard to learn how, but it does take alot of time to get things running well, and looking good. Like mapping there is a fine art to it that only comes with time, but if you have any questions about how or need tips feel free to contact me (see the contacts page for my e-mail).

Q: It's a bit dark, what should I do?

A: If you have trouble seeing there are a few things you can do, adjusting the gamma is the easiest way to make things visible, but it also washes out the color. Another solution that some like is using a .rtlight/lightmap hybrid, to do this go into the GRAHPICS menu and adjust RT WORLD LIGHTMAPS, the higher the setting the more visible the lightmaps will be, I personally do not like how it looks, but alot of people do, and it removes alot of those "dark spots".

Q: Are you ever going to work on .rtlights again?

A: Sadly no, all major updates are now done and I am very happy with the finished product that is ID1.zip, there will probably be some minor updates because I am sure there are things I missed or things that will look different on different video cards, but no more major releases.

Q: What now?

A: I plan to remain a member of the Quake Community, just not as active a member as I was, I look foward to seeing what LordHavoc has in store for the darkplaces engine and Quake in general, I am also very excited by some modeling and texturing projects, particularly Randy's.
